Silybum marianum ( L.) Gaertner (syn. Carduus marianus L.) belongs to the Asteraceae family ( Compositae ) It is native to southern Europe, southern Russia, Asia Minor and North Africa. It has been naturalized to North and South America.
Silymarin is the key constituent in Milk Thistle Seed. Silymarin is a flavonoid composed of 4 isomers: silybinin, silychristin, silydianin, isosilybinin. Silymarin is only soluble in Alcohol and not water.
